About Friends of UNFPA
Friends of UNFPA was established in 1998. It is a non-profit organization, headquartered in New York, that supports the work of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. UNFPA is delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. Friends of UNFPA advances this global effort by mobilizing funds and action for UNFPA’s lifesaving work.
Founded in 1969, UNFPA is the lead United Nations agency that expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy sexual and reproductive lives. UNFPA is on the ground, improving lives, in more than 150 countries. UNFPA accelerates progress towards universal access to sexual and reproductive health, including voluntary family planning and safe motherhood. It also advances the rights and opportunities of young people. www.UNFPA.org
Delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted
UNFPA provides 500 million couples with contraception each year. Still, 225 million want to postpone or delay pregnancy but are not using contraception. UNFPA is a leader in assisting countries in forecasting and supplying their needs for contraceptives, condoms, and other reproductive health supplies.
Delivering a world where every childbirth is safe
UNFPA helps women enjoy the right to give birth safely. Every two minutes a woman dies during pregnancy or childbirth. And, for every woman who dies, as many as 20 or 30 others are seriously harmed by obstetric fistula or other childbearing injuries. UNFPA prevents such tragedies by improving access to voluntary family planning, training skilled birth attendants, and increasing access to emergency obstetric care.
Delivering a world where every young person’s potential is fulfilled
More than 1.2 billion people are adolescents age 10 – 19, the parents of the next generation, and 88 percent of those teens live in developing countries. UNFPA believes that with the right policies, investments, and social support, young people can live healthier lives, free of poverty, and so can their families. The decisions they make today will impact the world we all live in tomorrow.
