DIRECTOR OF ADVOCACY AND OUTREACH

POSITION SUMMARY:

Americans for UNFPA seeks a Director of Advocacy and Outreach who will oversee all organizational advocacy and outreach activities. In particular, the Director is responsible for developing and supervising all national outreach efforts to increase American support for UNFPA, including Congressional support, for UNFPA, the lead international agency that promotes global women’s health and rights. She/he will direct, design and implement public outreach, legislative advocacy and public education strategies to build such awareness.

The Director of Advocacy and Outreach reports directly to the President of Americans for UNFPA, is a member of the senior management team and will work very closely with the Director of Communications & Marketing. She/he will supervise a staff of two and will be the primary manager for all consultants involved in Advocacy and Outreach activities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

     • Mobilize Americans in support of UNFPA.
           o Develop strategies to engage Americans with the mandate of UNFPA.
           o Develop and implement national grassroots activities, including on-line, designed to attract new supporters, engage existing supporters and generate support on behalf of UNFPA.
           o Coordinate and build, in close collaboration with the Development Department, a public education program to include events and other innovative ways of engaging the American public and building awareness of UNFPA.
           o Oversee existing advocacy program such as e-advocacy and student outreach.
           o Prepare substantive materials, including articles, for all mobilization efforts.

     • Establish and maintain strategic coalitions and collaborations within the NGO community.
          o Develop collaborations and cultivate relationships with select U.S.-based social movements
          o Represent AFU in key national coalitions.
          o Cultivate relationships at the national level and local level with partners.
          o Collaborate on specific national-level campaigns
     • Oversee all legislative advocacy functions.
          o Ensure implementation of the organization’s legislative plan
          o Manage D.C.-based consulting team and all organization-wide activities
          o Prepare, as necessary, all written materials.
          o Participate in all related fundraising activities
     • Draft all materials and content for organization’s advocacy and outreach initiatives.
     • Represent AFU and undertake extensive public speaking.
     • Coordinate all activities with AFU’s Communications & Marketing team.
     • Undertake all necessary fundraising with support from the Development team.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

     • Management functions include:
          o Work as a senior member of the management team.
          o Develop and manage annual budgets for her/his department.
          o Recruit, train and supervise her/his staff, interns, and external consultants and vendors.
          o Work closely with members of the Board of Directors.
          o Coordinate and staff specific Board committees (such as the Public Affairs Committee).

QUALIFICATIONS:

     • Extensive experience in developing and implementing national advocacy and outreach strategies required.
     • Strong track record of building and engaging in collaborations and coalitions necessary.
     • Knowledge of political and social mobilization strategies, particularly on-line.
     • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
     • Proven track record of fundraising, particularly with foundations.
     • Strong management skills required.
     • Team player with excellent follow-through, time management, attention to detail and humor.
     • Commitment to global social justice and development and women’s rights, reproductive health and rights and/or international affairs.
     • Master’s degree in International Affairs, Public Health, law or similar field.
     • Ability and willingness to travel.
