Americans for UNFPA Delegation
India: January 5 - 12, 2008

There’s room for two more. Please contact us immediately if you would like more information!

Americans for UNFPA leads delegations to visit UNFPA program countries. Open to all of our supporters, the goal of the trips is to increase awareness among Americans of the work of UNFPA. Our delegates become some of our strongest advocates who: meet with their elected representatives, sponsor informational events, tell family and friends about UNFPA, and support the work through financial contributions.

India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and has a rich cultural heritage made up of many diverse ethnic groups. With over one billion people, it has the second largest population in the world and the largest democracy in the world. Fifty-eight years after independence, it also has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Yet despite its high economic growth, India faces many challenges, chief among them poverty and gender disparity.

UNFPA launched its India program in 1974 and is currently finishing a five-year, $75 million plan for its programs as well as its work with the national government to establish policy priorities in the country. Fully 75 % of these resources have been allocated to improving the quality and coverage of reproductive health services in rural areas and marginalized urban communities.

UNFPA’s work in India includes:

  • Increasing access to family planning services
  • Ensuring maternal health through emergency obstetric care
  • HIV/AIDS prevention
  • Mobilizing communities to advocate for quality reproductive health care
  • Addressing violence against women
  • Preventing pre-natal sex selection
  • Promoting the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents

Our visit will include cultural and historic sites in New Delhi and the city of Jaipur. In addition, pre and post-trip extensions are offered to the Taj Mahal and Ranakpur and Mount Abu.
