About Americans for UNFPA

We build moral, political and financial support within the United States for UNFPA. UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, provides women’s health care and promotes the rights of women in 150 countries. It is the largest multilateral source of such assistance.

Our Work

Our outreach has generated tens of thousands of supporters for global women’s health. Supporters spanning the country have channeled their passion into advocacy on behalf of UNFPA’s program. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. In FY2010, the U.S. government increased its contribution to UNFPA to $51.4 million. It is our hope that U.S. support of UNFPA will continue to grow for FY 2011 and steadily increase in the coming years. (UNFPA, like all UN agencies, is funded by the voluntary contributions of governments and private foundations.)

Our Commitment

We are committed to the health and dignity of women everywhere. We are all a part of the global community. Join us in promoting human rights for all of us by empowering women everywhere. Post your Lifeline.

In 1994, the United Nations convened an historic conference in Cairo that changed the way governments, international agencies and other professionals thought and talked about population. At the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), leaders from around the world agreed that the future of the world's low-income countries depended less on controlling numbers of people and more on improving the quality of people's lives. The focus of that improvement, they agreed, must be global improvement in the status of women.

UNFPA's Official Mission Statement:

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. learn more about UNFPA's work
