After the Flood: Emergency Response in Pakistan

UNFPA has been on the frontlines of the coordinated UN emergency response to the flooding in Pakistan, which has affected some 17.2 million people, 6 million of whom are in need of humanitarian aid. The Fund pays particular attention to the needs of the 1.5 million women of reproductive age. 

 

A Different Kind of Graduation in South Lebanon Ending Harmful Practices through Community-led Social Change in Senegal 

Many organizations are working to eliminate female genital mutilation/cutting in Africa. But the organization that has been most successful in this, Senegal's Tostan, was not originally focused on this particular harmful practice.

"We didn't set out to end FGC," says Molly Melching, who founded Tostan in 1991. (The name Tostan means "breakthrough" in Wolof, a main language of Senegal.) "This is a holistic programme. The goal was simply to empower communities to make their own decisions about everything, including the things they've always taken for granted."

Over 11,000 Letters Delivered in Support of the Senate’s Passage of Preventing Child Marriage Act 

In a “youth-led marathon,” to fight gender inequality, promote the rights of girls, and lift girls out of poverty worldwide, over 40 children and young adults converged upon the Senate and hand delivered 11,000 letters in an effort to urge the passage of S.987, “The International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act. Ten year old Nardos, a young Ethiopian-American girl was thrilled to be a part of this call to action, and was exuberant as she met with several Senate aides to convey her concern over child marriage. Mamadou, a 12 year old boy who also took part in the meetings, empathized with millions of girls who are forced to marry at an early age, marking the death of their dreams and aspirations.
